Prospective Students

Entry Requirements

The medicine course at Monash University is currently only available to students on completion of their pre-university studies. Selection will be based on a combination of:

  • pre-university examination results
  • performance in a semi-structured interview
  • aptitude test results (ISAT)

Prerequisites

  • Satisfactory completion of an appropriate pre-university qualification. Students must study the subject English or ESL if it is available in their pre-university course.
  • Prerequisite subjects are:
    • English or English as a Second Language ( ESL) (if available as part of the pre-university course) and
    • Chemistry.

Applicants must demonstrate a high level of academic achievement, especially in the prerequisite subjects.

Applicants are required to undertake the  International Student Admissions Test (ISAT).

Please contact the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) regarding dates for sitting this test (ph +613 9277 5566). ISAT results will contribute towards the overall ranking for entry into the course.

For information regarding ISAT closing dates email mbbs.international@med.monash.edu.au

English requirements

Students whose pre-university qualification does not include English or ESL must be proficient in both written and spoken English. This can be demonstrated by one of the following:

  • a test score of B or better in the General Paper (English) in GCE A Level examination, or
  • TOEFL 600 (computer-based test 250) and a TWE or ER of 5, or
  • IELTS 7.0 (at least band 6.5 in each individual band).

Academic results (where available) will be considered together with the results of the aptitude test (ISAT) to pre-select qualified applicants for interview. Senior selection officers of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences will determine those applicants who are to be interviewed.

Applicants who have not been called to attend an interview cannot request an interview.

Final selection

The final ranked list of applicants will take into account scores in the pre-university examinations and performance at interview. Results of an aptitude test will also be taken into account.

Semi-structured interview

Interviews will be conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Melbourne. Other sites for interviews may also be announced. Please check the website and with local agents. Closing dates for applications and a schedule of interview dates are available on the School website.

The selection interview, of approximately 30 minutes duration, is conducted by a two-member panel of trained interviewers.

Interview questions have been designed to determine which applicants have relevant personal qualities such as leadership ability and motivation to succeed in the medical course. In the interview, the panel will assess several personal qualities in each applicant, including:

  • Quality of motivation Applicants should be able to demonstrate a realistic knowledge and understanding of what is involved in both the medical course and a career in medicine.
  • Appropriateness of interpersonal style Applicants should be able to discuss leadership, particularly the ability to inspire other people, and teamwork, particularly the ability to work within a collaborative unit. We expect our students to have the ability to listen and be non-judgmental and to have the flexibility to adapt to new situations. All of these attributes should be developed to an extent appropriate to the applicant's age and maturity.
  • Communication skill Doctors must be able to communicate effectively with others. We expect our applicants to demonstrate appropriate ability in communication skills during the interview. As part of the assessment of communication skill, applicants may be asked to 'detechnicalise' a scientific concept, i.e., to explain the concept in non-technical terms.

Applicants may also be asked to discuss a topical issue. It should be noted that the structure and content of the interview is constantly under review.

Special consideration/disadvantage

Statements regarding circumstances which may have seriously impaired an applicant's studies in the final year of school may be submitted with a request for special consideration at the time of application.

Transfers

There will be no opportunity for transfer of enrolment between the medicine course in Malaysia and Australia.

Health requirements

The faculty has an Immunisation and Infection Risk Policy and students are required to comply with a number of recommendations and procedures to enable them to proceed through the course with an acceptably low level of risk.

Other Requirements

To undertake any components of study in Australia, students will be required to undertake a police check by the Victorian Police, a Working with Children Check, and to register with the Medical Practitioners’ Board of Victoria at the time of commencement of study.
